Breast Augmentation with Lift

This procedure is ideal for women who are unhappy with their sagging appearance and want breast enlargement at the same time. The combination of breast augmentation with breast lift can restore a fuller rounder perkier shape. It is often used to provide fullness in the upper portion of the breast, when a lift alone is inadequate. Dr. Friedlander often performs these 2 procedures together to improve her patient’s appearance and self-esteem.

Have a Question

Am I a good candidate for a Breast Augmentation with Lift?

Women who have sagging, deflated breasts, are excellent candidates for this procedure. Sagging and loss of fullness are not youthful traits. They are frequently caused by pregnancy and nursing. They may also be caused by large swings in weight such as after gastric bypass, loss of hormonal support as seen with menopause, or because of genetics or gravity. To be a candidate for this surgery, the nipple and areola must sit low on the breast or even point downward. Sometimes we see a condition called pseudo ptosis where there is a loss of breast volume -causing the skin to look like an empty sac- but the nipples are actually in good position-high on the breast. If this is your situation, you might only need an augmentation. In other cases, the breast is misshapen as a result of a condition call tuberous or constricted breasts. Dr. Friedlander will review your causes of sagging during your consultation and advise you of the degree of sagging which is present. This of course will help to determine which surgery will provide the greatest benefit to you. While most women needing an augmentation and lift have nursed their children, women who have sagging for any reason and who are interested in lifting their breasts and increasing the size in a single operation are good candidates for this combined approach.

How is a Breast Augmentation with Lift performed?

Dr. Friedlander will review the best procedure with you during your consultation. The implant selected will depend on how much enlargement is desired-subtle or noticeable. The breast shape, size and degree of sagging is used to determine the best type of uplift to achieve your desired result. Moderate sagging can be improved with a “lollipop” or vertical mastopexy where an incision is placed around the areola and a vertical incision extends down from the areola to the breast crease. More severe degrees of sagging will need an additional incision in the natural breast crease. In some instances, as with constricted or tuberous breasts, the uplift and implants are performed using an incision around the areola alone.

During the surgery, she will insert the implants first, followed by the lift to reposition the nipple and then she will tighten the skin. This allows her to tailor the lift over the implant. This is an outpatient procedure, which permits you to recover in the comfort of your own home.

Is it safe to perform the procedures together?

Studies have shown that this combination of breast lift with augmentation is safe to perform together. Often these procedures are combined with others such as mommy makeovers and procedures to lift and tighten the body after massive weight loss. As with independently performed breast augmentation and breast lift, complications do occur, but they are uncommon. Common side effects are bruising and swelling, but these are temporary and are part of the overall healing process. The sagging has been caused by a loss of intrinsic or structural ligamentous support of the breast and skin. Thus, the breast will settle over a period of months and subtle changes in appearance will occur. Dr. Friedlander has performed countless numbers of these procedures and understands the issues involved. Her procedures are performed with great care and precision, optimizing outcomes and reducing complications.

What is the recovery like from a Breast Augmentation with Lift?

The recovery is similar to breast augmentation or breast uplift alone. Combining the 2 will not lengthen the recovery. A sports bra is recommended after the surgery for support. Women can return to work like activities 5-7 days after the surgery. There is no working out or strenuous activity for 4 weeks. Mild swelling, and in few instances, bruising occurs, but both of these resolves rapidly.

Can this surgery be done without an implant (Auto-Augmentation) ?

Breast augmentation using an implant is an excellent procedure to improve the both the size and shape of the breast. A lift can be added to restore a more youthful appearance. The implant provides fullness in the upper portion of the breast where it is often lacking. There is another option for a woman who wants a lift, but does not want an implant, called an auto-augmentation. This procedure is done with a lift, and repositions some of the breast tissue behind the nipple, creating more fullness on the superior portion of the breast. It is ideal for women who have a lot of sagging, and are seeking an improvement in shape, but do not wish to have a significant change in size.
