Spider Vein Treatment

Laser treatments are an excellent option for improving the appearance of spider veins. The treatment takes 15-30 minutes and you can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.  Spider veins are unsightly clusters of small blood vessels most commonly found on the legs. They develop over time, and are related to pregnancy, the use of birth control pills, heredity or other medical issues.

Have a Question

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are the tiny jagged blood vessels that develop as we age and can be seen right under the skin, often around the ankles or knees or even the face. They may be red, blue or even purple in color. Measuring between 1-3 mm in size (less than 1/10 of an inch), they look like a spider’s web, although they can take on any appearance and be of any length. Larger vessels are referred to as varicose veins.

Am I a good candidate for Spider Vein treatment?

Spider Veins on the face and legs are easily treated with laser. Excellent results can be achieved but it is important to remember that they may recur if their cause is not addressed.

What treatments are there for Spider Veins?

Dr Friedlander offers laser treatment of spider veins. The laser delivers bursts of light during the treatment. The energy in this light is absorbed by the vessel, causing it to collapse and seal off. Immediately after the procedure, tiny bruises can be seen along the vein. After a day or 2 the treated areas may take on the appearance of a scratch which fades and disappears.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a chemical, using a tiny needle, directly into the blood vessel. This needle is so small that it is almost painless, and certainly very well tolerated. This chemical irritates the inside of the vein causing it to collapse and disappear. There are a variety of solutions which can be used, such as hypertonic saline(salt water), liquid detergents, or naturally found chemicals. The veins are often interconnected, so a single injection may cause many veins to disappear. Dr Friedlander will examine you and advise you on the treatment for your particular problem. The treatment takes 15-30 minutes. If you have large areas that need to be treated, more than one visit may be required.

Spider Vein treatment is limited to smaller veins.

Do Spider Veins pose any risk to my health?

Spider veins tend to be hereditary, but do not cause any health risks. They are related to an increase in pressure in the lower extremities and may be caused by standing for extended periods of time, pregnancy or anything that causes increased pressure in the abdomen or the use of hormones as in BCP or HRT. Other causes include trauma or previous injury to the skin or even sun damage or Rosacea.

What will my recovery be like after Spider Vein treatment?

You will need to wear support stockings for a few days afterward and you can return to working out after several days as well. Brownish discoloration can occur after treatment. This is related to the blood in the vessels breaking down and being absorbed like a bruise. This usually improves spontaneously in a few weeks.
