Sculptra is different. It is not a true filler since it does not add volume to the face the way HA’s or Radiesse do. Sculptra adds volume by stimulating new collagen production. As new collagen is formed you begin to see a natural fullness develop. It is different because the effects are not seen immediately as with other fillers. There is a delay of several weeks before you begin to see some improvement and a delay of several months to see the end result.Have a Question
What happens as we get older?
It is a fact that we begin to lose collagen as a young adult. It is estimated that we lose 1% of our skin collagen a year after the age of 20. Collagen is the protein building block of our bodies. Our collagen production slows down, but we continue to use it on a daily basis resulting in a net loss. We have lost 20% of our collagen by the age of 40. Sculptra stimulates new collagen, restoring strength and vitality to our skin. The advantage of Sculptra is that it is so gradual that your friends can see you everyday and not know that you have had something done, but they will notice that you look better. Sculptra also lasts up to 2 years although it may last longer (since the makers of Sculptra didn’t study its longevity beyond 2 years). The other fillers last about 1 year.
As we age, gravity also gets the better of us. Gravity, when combined with sun damage and the loss of support associated with the collagen loss, stimulates a gradual descent of the skin, muscle and fat of the face, leading to folds around the mouth(laugh lines), jowls and marionette lines, and a loss of volume sometimes described as a gaunt appearance in its extreme. We also see a resorption of bone. Yes that is true, we lose bone mass in our face leading to even greater skeletal changes. Just look at your mother and your grandmother and you will understand. Aging is more than just skin and muscle heading south. It involves loss of skeletal support in the face. Sculptra can help to correct this and restore a more youthful appearance in ways that other fillers can’t.
How is Sculptra different?
Sculptra offers a means of improvement performed in the safety of Dr. Friedlander’s office. It helps to turn back the clock resulting in an improvement that can be subtle or profound. Sculptra Aesthetic provides long lasting improvement and correction of facial aging. It is different from other fillers in that the improvement is gradual occurring over 2 or 3 months. The Sculptra® Aesthetic is composed of an injectable biocompatible material, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), that stimulates the production of the skin’s own collagen to help restore facial balance and youthful facial contours in a gradual and very natural way. Generally a series of 2-3 treatments at intervals of 4-6 weeks are necessary to achieve the desired effect which can last up to two years. Sculptra, originally approved to reduce the signs of facial lipoatrophy, reinforces your skin’s foundation by stimulating collagen. This restores the fullness to wrinkles and folds that has been lost over time, by distributing the volume all over, not just to a specific region. This is not a quick fix, since it restores balance in a way that other fillers do not. The result is a natural appearance that looks exactly like you, only fuller and better.
How are Sculptra treatments performed?
Sculptra is performed by injection. The face is first washed. Ice packs help provide anesthesia, but supplemental topical can be given if requested. The Sculptra has been mixed with lidocaine which reduces any discomfort. Dr. Friedlander will do an analysis of the face identifying the areas of volume loss and asymmetry. The first treatment begins the process where all regions are treated. Subsequent treatments are more directed at improving the deficiencies or asymmetries. Immediately after the treatment you will see swelling. This is from the injection. You will need to massage all areas 5 times a day for 5 days, for 5 minutes at a time, to help distribute the Sculptra evenly into the tissue. Since the Sculptra is stimulating new collagen formation, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks to start to see the improvement.
How many Sculptra treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed varies based on how much tissue loss is present. Most 40 year olds need 2 treatments and most 60 year olds need 3 treatments. Everyone is assessed 4-6 weeks after the treatment to determine if additional Sculptra is needed. The Sculptra is long lasting but it is not permanent. Touch ups may be desired every few years.
When can I resume normal activity?
The treatment is done in the comfort of the office. You may resume normal activities afterwards. You will be instructed to massage all areas treated several times a day for 5 days to ensure a balanced result.
What are the risks of Sculptra?
As with all fillers, the most common side effects are swelling, tenderness, redness, discomfort, bruising, itching and lumps. Sculptra may be associated with small lumps called granulomas. These are uncommon and are reduced with the use of massage.
