The neck can be one of the first places that changes associated with the aging process are seen. The neck and décolleté’ are often exposed to the sun leading to wrinkles and age spots. Some people gain fat on the neck leading to a double chin or “Turkey Neck”. Some people maintain excellent skin tone, while others develop sagging. A neck lift is a procedure that improves the appearance of the neck by tightening skin and muscle while reducing excess fat, creating more youthful contours.Have a Question
Am I a good candidate for a Neck Lift?
The best candidates for a neck lift have localized problems consisting of skin and muscle laxity and excess fatty tissue that has occurred from age or weight loss. They are in good general health and do not smoke. Typically, younger patients are better suited for the procedure, but anyone who is unhappy with their neck and feels they are not ready for a full-face lift can receive the procedure.
You may not be a good candidate if your problem is primarily extra fatty tissue and you are young with excellent skin elasticity. In this instance, Dr. Friedlander may recommend liposuction of the neck alone to achieve a slimmer more youthful neck and jawline.
Also keep in mind that gravity effects not only the neck but the face. As we age, the skin, muscle and fat of the face move south, often creating a poor jawline. The neck lift can tighten the neck, but a lower face lift is needed to restore more youthful contours to your face, lifting and tightening your cheeks and jowls.
A noninvasive treatment, Ultherapy, may be suggested if your problem is localized to neck lines and wrinkle in the lower two thirds of the neck, but there is insufficient laxity to warrant a neck lift surgery.
What results can I expect from a Neck Lift?
- Correction of sagging skin and loose muscles
- Reduction of fat
- Improved jaw line
- Can be performed with other procedures including fat transfers to restore facial volume
A neck lift rejuvenates the jaw line and the neck, correcting the signs of aging in that area. It will not alter the facial features. If a traditional face lift is not performed at the same time as the neck lift, other procedures such as fat transfers, eyelid and brow lifts can be performed simultaneously to create more youthful contours.
How does the Neck Lift procedure work?
Dr Friedlander will evaluate you to determine the best approach to correct your problem. Often she will recommend combining several procedures such as a neck lift, liposuction and fat transfers to the jowl area and folds to achieve the best results. Incisions which are made behind the ear and under the chin permit liposuction, tightening of the muscles and removal of excess skin when needed. Swelling numbness and bruising may occur postoperatively. Patients are advised to wear a compression band after their operation to minimize swelling. They may return to work after several days but strenuous activity and heavy lifting are not permitted for 4 weeks
