What is Microneedling?
Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine. As a non-invasive procedure that stimulates collagen, it is useful for improving fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation and even stretch marks. It is used most often on the face and décolleté to help make the skin look firm and fresh. The addition of PRP, platelet rich plasma, is an even better way to turn back the clock and brighten your skin.
How does Microneedling work?
The MicroPen is a mechanical device with many short fine needles. These needles penetrate into the outer layers of the skin, creating micro puncture wounds also called micro channels.. As these tiny channels heal, they promote new collagen and elastin, the backbones of healthy youthful skin. Gels containing hyaluronic acids and protein peptides are applied to the skin before and during the procedure, so they can penetrate into the deeper skin layers through the micro channels stimulating additional skin rejuvenation.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Platelet Rich Plasma is a component of your blood. It contains many different growth factor proteins that have long been known to have regenerative properties. PRP has been used in orthopedic surgery for years to help speed recovery after joint injuries. When used in combination with microneedling it can help correct a variety of age related concerns such as sun spots, fine lines, wrinkles and more. PRP can be delivered into the skin with microneedling, improving skin tone and texture, and stimulating new collagen production. It is an effective way to stimulate a more youthful appearance. Alternatively, it can be injected by Dr. Friedlander. One of the exciting applications we are exploring is PRP injections for hair loss in men and women.
PRP is a natural product obtained from your own blood. A small amount of blood is drawn by our nurse and centrifuged to separate the PRP from the remaining blood. The PRP component is removed. It is applied to the skin during the microneedling, promoting its penetration into the deeper layers where it is most useful. Since it is your own blood, there is no chance of allergic reaction.
What can PRP be used for?
PRP contains numerous proteins and factors necessary for tissue regeneration and healing. These are secreted by the granules located inside the platelets. These substances are too numerous to review here, but they function to stimulate the healing process and to stimulate the production of collagen, vascular growth, cellular growth and mesenchymal proliferation. Many of these proteins are called growth factors and are found in high concentrations in fetal tissue. Studies have confirmed the safety of and multiple uses for PRP. In plastic surgery it is used for the treatment of:
- Acne scars
- Fine lines
- Skin tightening
- Shrinking pore size
- Texture irregularities
- Aging Hands
- Dark circles beneath the eyes
What does Microneedling feel like?
We apply a topical anesthetic which numbs the skin. The procedure is done by by gently pressing the micropen against the skin. As it is moved across the surface you may feel some roughness similar to fine sandpaper.
Is there any downtime after Microneedling?
This is a non-invasive treatment. There may be redness lasting for 1-4 days. You may resume all activities the day after the procedure. Stinging may last a short period of time, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Emollient moisturizers will sooth the skin and speed up the post-care process. Gentle cleansers and sunscreens must be used afterwards.
How many Microneedling treatments will I need?
The best results are achieved with a series of 4-6 treatments, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. There is an immediate glow to the skin with visible changes noted as new collagen is formed. Areas prone to fine lines and wrinkles such as the lips and the décolleté may benefit from annual treatments since we can’t stop the aging process.
