What is Lip Enhancement?
Many women who look into cosmetic treatments want to enhance the size and shape of their lips. While some patients are unhappy with their naturally small lips, others want to address imperfections around their mouth. Dr. Friedlander believes in creating a natural result that frames your mouth and is proportional to your features.
Lip enhancement is a non-surgical treatment that uses HA fillers to plump the look of your lips. HAs (Hyaluronic Acids) are naturally found in your body, and hydrate and plump your skin. When injected into the lips, they draw water in, adding fullness and smoothing the fine lines.
Am I a candidate for Lip Enhancement?
You may be a good candidate for lip enhancement if you are in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding your results. Dr. Friedlander will discuss your options and help you figure out the best treatment. Lip enhancement is a good option for anyone who is looking to treat:
- Thin, small lips
- Asymmetrical lips
- Lips that lack definition
- Smoker’s lines
What types of Lip Enhancements are there?
Dr. Friedlander uses a variety of fillers, including JUVÉDERM® Ultra, JUVÉDERM Volbella®, Restylane®, and Restylane® Refyne. Each product contains HA (Hyaluronic Acid), a sugar naturally produced by your body that hydrates the lips. They vary in density and composition, so they are well-suited to combating a variety of concerns around the lips. The treatment can result in sexy and voluptuous-looking lips that you will be ecstatic about.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra can restore fullness to your lips. It is a soft filler, naturally adding volume to your lips. It has withstood the test of time.
JUVÉDERM Volbella® is less dense than its cousin, JUVÉDERM® Ultra. It is ideally suited for the thin vertical lines often seen above the lips, called smokers lines. JUVÉDERM Volbella® creates a very subtle improvement in definition in women who are afraid of looking overdone.
Restylane® treatment can reduce moderate to severe wrinkles around your mouth and can also be used to add volume to your lips. When used along the border of the lip, it adds definition to the lip, and reduces lipstick “bleed”
Restylane® Refyne differs in formulation from its cousin Restylane®. It uses an innovative cross-linking, called XpresHAn Technology to maintain the natural appearance of your features. It integrates beautifully into the skin, making it virtually invisible while providing the enhancement you desire.
Restylane® Defyne is a denser filler. It may be used to provide even greater enhancement if your lips are full to start with. It too uses XpresHAn Technology to maintain the natural appearance of your features.
Are there other options for Lip Enhancement?
Fillers in the lips can last from a few months to up to one year. If you are looking for a natural, longer-lasting result, fat transfers may offer you promise. This is a minor surgical procedure that will harness your own body fat to increase the plumpness of your lips.
Other alternatives include the use of grafts and surgical “flap” procedures. Flaps are particularly well-suited for women who have a very long upper lip, since this procedure exposes more of the vermillion tissue while reducing the distance between the nose and the lips, creating improved proportion and fullness. This procedure can be performed in the office but is more commonly performed alongside other rejuvenation procedures.
All of these treatments, when properly applied, can naturally enhance your lips, creating the lip shape and appearance you desire.
What will my recovery process be like?
Because lip enhancement offers a non-surgical approach and is performed on an outpatient basis, there is little to no downtime following your treatment, meaning that you can return to all activities. The filler contains a numbing agent, so your lips will feel numb for a little while. Swelling is variable and usually mild in nature. Other side effects include bruising and firmness, which should improve spontaneously. Icing your lips afterwards and sleeping with your head elevated will help to reduce the swelling.
What results can I expect?
The result of lip fillers is variable, lasting between a few months and about a year. It may take a day or two for the filler to settle and for you to get used to your new look. Treatments need to be repeated to maintain your improvement.
Are there any risks or side effects involved?
There are risks with any procedure. The risks associated with lip fillers are minimal; swelling, bruising, tenderness, and some firmness will occur but should resolve after a few days. The use of ice packs will help to reduce the appearance of swelling. You can return to normal activities shortly after the procedure.
