Hand Rejuvenation in NJ
Many women and men believe that aging only manifests itself in areas like the face and neck. While these are common areas for volume loss, wrinkles, and pigmentation irregularities, they are not the only ones. There is another region that is even more devious in revealing your actual age than your face: your hands.
Despite your best efforts to maintain a youthful-looking face and neck, your hands can give away your secrets. By improving skin tone, texture, and appearance, hand rejuvenation helps ensure that every handshake is a confident one.
Dr. Beverly Friedlander offers hand rejuvenation in Short Hills, New Jersey, so patients can feel confident in all aspects of their appearance.Have a Question
What is Hand Rejuvenation?
As you age, your body changes. These changes are seen all over your body, including your face and hands. Over time, your hands lose fullness and begin to look fragile. This loss results in skin laxity and causes veins and tendons to be more visible.
While many skin creams and lotions treat aging hands, it sometimes takes more than a cream.
Hand rejuvenation addresses volume loss and skin quality to restore youthful-looking hands.
Am I a candidate for Hand Rejuvenation?
If you are displeased by your hands’ general thinness or skin quality, hand rejuvenation may be the ideal treatment for your concerns.
Ideal Hand Rejuvenation candidates:
- Are displeased by their thinning hands
- Do not smoke
- Are in good overall health
- Do not have any conditions that impair healing
- Have realistic expectations
How can I benefit from Hand Rejuvenation?
Men and women consider hand rejuvenation to reduce:
- Prominent veins and tendons (due to volume loss)
- Wrinkled and thin hands
- Age spots
- Uneven pigmentation

What will my Hand Rejuvenation entail?
Hand rejuvenation uses dermal fillers or fat grafting to restore volume and resurfacing techniques to minimize skin tone or texture irregularities. Your hand rejuvenation treatment will be tailored to your specific needs, which will be determined during your consultation.
What can I expect during my Hand Rejuvenation consultation with Dr. Bev?
A consultation with Dr. Beverly Friedlander or one of our skilled aestheticians is necessary before your hand rejuvenation. During this meeting, you will:
- Discuss your goals and expectations
- Evaluate the extent of volume loss in the back of the hands
- Determine the appropriate technique for your hand rejuvenation
- Discuss combination techniques, such as skin resurfacing and fillers
How is Hand Rejuvenation performed?
Hand rejuvenation is performed and can achieve excellent results with both fillers and fat transfer.
These techniques are performed in our office under a local anesthetic. Hand rejuvenation takes about 30 minutes.
Regardless of your chosen technique, your hand rejuvenation starts with a thorough cleansing of the hand to hydrate and stimulate the skin.
What is Hand Rejuvenation with dermal fillers?
The most common form of hand rejuvenation uses dermal fillers to restore volume. With these fillers, we can create softer, plumper hands and reduce the prominence of the veins and tendons by filling the spaces between them.
Dr. Friedlander prefers fillers such as RADIESSE® or Restylane® Lyft. This is an in-office treatment that results in immediate improvement. On average, one syringe of filler is needed per hand, but this will depend on the severity of the problem.
To perform hand rejuvenation with dermal fillers:
- A topical anesthetic may be applied
- The filler is premixed with lidocaine, so the injection is relatively painless
- Ther filler is injected into various areas of the hands
- The hand is once again massaged to distribute the filler evenly
What is Hand Rejuvenation with fat transfer?
Fat transfer offers a natural alternative to fillers and results in immediate improvement. Although fat transfers are more natural and confer longer-lasting results, the process of harvesting fat may be a bit more uncomfortable and is best done in an operating room.
Fat transfers may also be associated with a little more swelling.
To perform fat transfer to the hands:
- Fat harvesting sites are determined and marked
- Fat cells are extracting using liposuction techniques
- The removed fat cells are processed and purified
- The fat is injected into various areas of the hands
Should I combine other procedures with my Hand Rejuvenation?
Much like facial correction, hand correction needs more than volume. It also requires improvement in the skin’s texture and color.
Common non-surgical combination procedures include:
- Laser treatments to reduce brown spots (age spots) and minimize wrinkles
- Chemical peels to exfoliate the skin on the hands and minimize tone or texture concerns
In both instances, we need to pre-treat the hands to ensure an even correction of color.
What can I expect during my Hand Rejuvenation recovery?
You can return to all activities immediately after your hand rejuvenation with dermal fillers. Mild swelling and bruising are expected, which can be alleviated with NSAIDs and by keeping the hands elevated. You should avoid any strenuous activity (especially anything involving the hands) for at least 24 to 48 hours after injection.
Hand rejuvenation with fat grafting is slightly more involved, as this technique involves harvesting fat cells from elsewhere on your body. Still, most people return to all day-to-day activities within a few days, and any swelling, bruising, or discomfort can be comforted with over-the-counter pain medication.
Are there any risks associated with Hand Rejuvenation?
Hand rejuvenation is considered very safe; however, all cosmetic procedures come with some degree of risk. Dr. Friedlander will discuss your potential risk factors, including your medical history and any medications, during your consultation.
Some of the potential risks after hand rejuvenation include:
- Allergic reaction (if fillers are chosen)
You can reduce your chances of complications by following Dr. Friedlander’s recommendations before and after your hand rejuvenation.
Keeping your hands elevated after treatment usually helps to reduce or eliminate many of these side effects.
When will I see my Hand Rejuvenation results?
You will see the results of your hand rejuvenation right away, and these results will continue to improve as the fillers or fat settles. You may see the final results of dermal fillers sooner than those of fat transfer since some of the transferred fat will be absorbed by the body.
Hand rejuvenation results in younger-looking, more beautiful hands that no longer give your true age away.
