What is cellulite?
Simply put, cellulite is the dimpling that can be seen on the skin, commonly on the buttocks and thighs. While there are several factors related to lifestyle, diet, hormones and genetics, the actual cause are connective bands (septae) that travel between the underlying tissue and the skin. These bands are similar to rubber bands, and pull the skin down creating a dimple. The greater the density of the septae, the more the cellulite. These septae stiffen with age, so as the skin laxity increases with age or weight loss and pulls on the bands, the cellulite may worsen. Cellfina works by reducing these bands.
What is Cellfina?
Cellfina is a patented technology that uses a process called controlled subcision. It precisely targets and releases the bands causing the cellulite, allowing the skin to bounce back. It is minimally invasive, so it is done in the comfort of the office. That means minimal downtime, and no general anesthesia. It is unique in its delivery system. The areas to be treated are clearly marked, they are stabilized using a custom platform and then numbed with a local anesthetic such as lidocaine. A precision handpiece, fitted with a microblade, is used to divide the bands just below the skin, releasing them and smoothing the skin.
Cellfina is approved for treatment of cellulite of the buttock and thighs. The best results for Cellfina are seen in women who do not have excess fat or loss of skin elasticity coupled with their cellulite.
Am I a good candidate for Cellfina?
Cellulite is common in women. About 85% of women suffer with cellulite making them feel self conscious about their appearance. They have tried not only creams but other non invasive treatments such as radio frequency, laser and ultrasound, with limited or no improvement. The best candidates for Cellfina, are women who have deep dimples in the thighs and buttocks. There is an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction approaching 96% at 2 years. Men with cellulite may be candidates for this procedure as well.
How many treatments are needed?
Cellfina requires only one treatment. The dimples that are treated disappear and the results last at least 2 years.
What can I expect after Cellfina?
Patients can start to see results in as few as 3 days. There may be swelling and bruising.
How soon after my Cellfina treatment can I return to normal activities?
It is wise to plan on taking up to 24hrs off from work and a few days away from the gym although this is not always needed.
How long does Cellfina take?
There is some variation here. The procedure averages 45-60 minutes. The length of time will depend on the areas being treated.
What are the risks of Cellfina?
No serious side effects have been reported. There is tenderness and bruising which resolves quickly permitting a rapid return to all activities.
