Have a Question

Why BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Has anyone ever asked you if you are getting enough sleep? Or, why are you always angry? Do you think you look tired or rundown because of wrinkles around your eyes, or brows, even though you feel great? These are signs that BOTOX® Cosmetic may be right for you. No one is immune to wrinkles. Looking at a computer all day or squinting in the sunshine may be the cause of wrinkles that you used to think were relegated to older adults. BOTOX® Cosmetic offers a quick simple treatment that will enhance your appearance with little or no downtime and keep you looking natural and youthful.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic was the first of a group of products now known collectively as neuromodulators. These products are approved for cosmetic and non-cosmetic uses. Botox® Cosmetic was introduced in 2002 and was the first FDA approved treatment for moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and the fine wrinkles or crow’s feet next to the eyes.

Is Botox® Cosmetic safe?

Botox® Cosmetic has been extensively studied and is approved for cosmetic use in 96 countries. It has a long safety record, and has been available since 2002.

How does Botox® Cosmetic work?

Botox® Cosmetic works by temporarily reducing the activity of muscles that cause wrinkles. It results in a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet (lines around your eyes) and your frown lines between your brows. Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein that prevents the nerve impulse from getting to the muscle thereby preventing its contraction. This action is temporary lasting about 3-4 months. As the Botox® Cosmetic wears off, the muscle begins to respond to the nerve impulse leading to contraction and reoccurrence of the lines and wrinkles.

Over the years, these repeat contractions imprint a furrow or wrinkle into the skin causing visible lines even in younger adults. These lines can be difficult to eliminate if they are longstanding or associated with sun damage. Considering that we lose about 1% of collagen in our skin a year, after the age of 20, it’s no wonder that these lines can begin at an early age.

What can Botox® Cosmetic be used to treat?

Botox® Cosmetic can be used in both men and women. Although originally formulated for non cosmetic purposes, it was rebranded and marketed by Allergan in 2002 for cosmetic use to temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines in adults. Since then, the FDA indications have expanded to include the temporary treatment of crow’s feet (fine lines around the eyes) and horizontal forehead frown lines.

Today, Botox can be used to address many different areas of facial concern:

  • Frown Lines
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Gummy Smile
  • Neck Bands (often seen in the neck as we age)
  • Strong or Square Jaw (often caused by overactive Masseter muscle)
  • Downturned Corner of the Mouth
  • Smokers Lines (vertical lines seen on the lips)
  • Bunnies Lines (on the side of the nose)
  • Thin Upper Lip ( it relaxes the muscle up a little)
  • Peach Pit Chin (lines on the front of the chin)

Botox® Cosmetic has non cosmetic uses as well. It is FDA approved for treatment of migraines, excessive sweating, overactive bladder and muscle spasms. Dr. Friedlander performs Botox® Cosmetic injections to treat a condition called “hyperhidrosis” or excess sweating under the arms or on the palms. This leads to perspiration stains on their clothing and might be perceived as an anxiety reaction. Botox® Cosmetic can be used to reduce sweating in both locations.

How does Botox® Cosmetic effect the surrounding muscles?

Botox® Cosmetic spreads a little after it is injected. That is why its important to have an experienced injector such as Dr. Friedlander perform your treatment. She will explain the concept of effect and counter effect. Muscles do many things. Using the brow as an example, some muscles pull it up, and some muscles pull it down. By precisely injecting the Botox® Cosmetic, you can selectively block the muscles that control brow movement. By weakening the muscle that pulls it down, the muscle that pulls it up becomes stronger, a lot like a SeeSaw. It is important to understand how all the surrounding muscles function to be able to create a natural look.

When should I start Botox® Cosmetic?

The best time to start using Botox® Cosmetic is when you see lines or wrinkles that are bothering you. Many women start seeing wrinkles in their 20’s or 30’s, particularly if they spend a great deal of time online or in the sun. Remember, we lose 1% of collagen in or skin annually beginning in our 20’s. That is why we site age as a cause of wrinkles. Some people use Botox® Cosmetic for prevention. This makes sense because the reduction in repetitive muscle contractions prevents the wrinkles and keeps the face looking natural and youthful.

What alternatives are there to Botox® Cosmetic?

  • Xeomin
  • Dysport

What can I expect during my Botox® Cosmetic treatment?

The treatment involves a few tiny injections with minimal discomfort frequently described as pin pricks or bug bites. It takes 1-3 days to take effect on average and lasts up to 4 months. The activity of the muscle will begin to return before the lines are seen.

What can I expect after my Botox® Cosmetic treatment?

After Botox® Cosmetic, you can resume normal activities immediately after the injection. Do not resume strenuous activities or go to the gym for several hours after the treatment. Many patients feel nothing as the Botox® Cosmetic is kicking in, but some patients, including New Jersey Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Beverly Friedlander, a long time user of Botox® Cosmetic, will get a headache or feel a tightness before the effect kicks in. Other experiences include bruising or swelling at the injection site. Other side effects are uncommon and self-limiting.

Is there a way to save money while using Botox® Cosmetic?

Without sounding flip, by becoming a frequent flyer, you can save money. Allergan, the makers of Botox® Cosmetic, have created a great program called Brilliant Distinctions, which gives you points every time you purchase an Allergan product. That means every time you are treated with Botox® Cosmetic, fillers such as Juvederm, Kybella, Latisse and now, CoolSculpting you receive points which can redeemed for coupons to be used on future purchases. All you have to do is register with Allergan and Dr. Friedlander’s staff does the rest.
