How many times have you heard the expression “No pain, no gain”? Well that might not be true anymore. For years the only way to remove fat other than with diet and exercise, was with a surgical procedure called Liposuction. Now, there is a new way to remove those stubborn fat pockets without surgery. The revolutionary technology, called CoolSculpt arose from a simple observation that some children developed dimples in their cheeks after eating popsicles. Scientists developed a patented technology called Cryolipolysis to selectively cool the fat, without harming the skin or the surrounding tissue. Once the fat cells have been treated they are naturally removed by the body, resulting in a loss of inches and a reduction in the size of the fat pocket. The entire process takes 2-3 months, but visible improvement is seen after only 2-3 weeks in many cases. About 20-25% of the fat is removed so a second treatment may be needed.

CoolSculpting is ideal for those stubborn areas of fat, not large enough for you to seek liposuction but large enough to be bothersome in clothing. Areas such as the “muffin top” in women and the “love handles” in men are ideal. Treatment of the abdomen frequently involves these areas as well. How many times have you seen women who are rail thin who have large thighs. This offers the perfect solution for both outer and inner thighs.

The procedure is non-invasive. That means no needles, no anesthesia and no downtime. The process takes about an hour during which an applicator selectively cools the tissue. It is not painful, but can be best described as annoying or uncomfortable as when your foot falls asleep and then wakes up. Some people do experience minor discomfort or numbness but this is temporary lasting a short time only. Redness and mild swelling have been reported but disappear spontaneously. There are no restrictions in activity afterward, nor any special care required. Dr Friedlander underwent the procedure at the end of a long day, and returned to the operating room the following morning for a 6 hour case.

To be fair, there are other methods of non invasive fat reduction involving different technologies such as ultrasound and radiofrequency. Obviously, some technologies work better than others. CoolSculpt is not a substitute for a lifestyle change. With any treatment, it is important to eat healthy, maintain your weight and participate in physical activity. CoolSculpt has none of the drawbacks of conventional liposuction. It is ideal for smaller areas, it is non surgical, requires no downtime, can be done after dropping off the kids in the morning and before picking them up in the afternoon and is easily covered by your clothing, including that bathing suit that you have been wanting to wear.
