What is Lumecca?

Lumecca emits pulses of light that target melanin or hemoglobin in the skin. The light energy is absorbed by these pigments, breaking them down so your body can gradually flush them away.

Most sessions last about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the treatment area. The sensation is often described as a light snap or flick on the skin.

After treatment, pigmentation may temporarily darken before fading, and some redness or mild swelling may occur for a day or two. This dark pigmentation looks like coffee grinds, but may only be seen after the first treatment.

What Lumecca Treats

What to Expect After Lumecca

Lumecca IPL can treat a variety of pigment and vascular concerns, including:

  • Sun spots and age spots
  • Redness and broken capillaries
  • Rosacea
  • Freckles and uneven tone
  • Hyperpigmentation

Lumecca can be used on the face, chest, neck, hands, and other sun-exposed areas that show signs of photoaging.

Results develop over the course of one to two weeks, depending on your skin’s response. Dr. Bev typically recommends a series of 3-6 treatments for full results, spaced several weeks apart and maintanence treatments once-twice a year.

Common benefits include:

  • Brighter skin tone
  • More uniform pigmentation
  • Reduction in red or brown discoloration
  • Fresher, healthier-looking skin

Lumecca is also known as a photofacial, since it treats problems caused by sun exposure. The most important thing that you can do is to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for four weeks after (and before) the IPL Photofacial and make sure to apply sunscreen liberally to protect your skin.

What Lumecca Will Not Treat

Lumecca is a light based skin treatment. It works well on people with lighter skin types ( Fitzpatrick I-IV). It should be used with caution on people with darker Fitzpatrick V or VI type skins as it can cause a paradoxical hyperpigmentation. Dr. Bev may recommend pretreatment with a hydroquinone if you have darker skin. Patients who have melasma which is sometimes called a “pregnancy mask” benefit from other forms of treatments such as chemical peels.
