Avéli vs. Cellfina for Thigh and Buttock Cellulite

Cellulite on the thighs and buttocks isn’t always a fat problem. In many cases, dimples form because tight bands beneath the skin pull downward, creating small depressions that don’t respond much to exercise or weight changes.

Beverly Friedlander MD in Short Hills, NJ, treats cellulite dimpling with Avéli and Cellfina, two minimally invasive options that work beneath the surface of the skin. Dr. Beverly Friedlander is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and her current practice focuses on physician-led, non-surgical aesthetics for patients from Summit, Chatham, Madison, Florham Park, Westfield, and Morris County.

What Avéli and Cellfina Have in Common

Both treatments are used for cellulite dimples caused by fibrous bands under the skin. These bands, often called septa, tether the skin downward. Releasing them can allow the skin to look smoother as the area heals.

Neither treatment is meant for general fat reduction. They also won’t fully correct loose skin or crepey texture. That distinction is important because treating the wrong concern can lead to disappointment, even when the treatment itself is well performed.

How Avéli Works

Avéli works beneath the skin, where tight septa bands pull down and create visible dimples. Dr. Bev evaluates the area while you’re standing, then marks the dimples that appear to be caused by tethering rather than loose skin or surface texture.

This treatment is done with local anesthesia. A small device is inserted through tiny openings and guided under the skin to the specific band causing each dimple.

The key difference is that Avéli lets Dr. Bev treat the dimples more directly, one by one, by locating and releasing the individual bands responsible for the pulling.

How Cellfina Works

Cellfina also treats cellulite by releasing fibrous bands beneath the skin, but the treatment uses a different method. After Dr. Bev evaluates your cellulite pattern and marks the dimples, local anesthesia is used to keep the area comfortable.

During Cellfina, a suction-based device stabilizes the dimpled tissue, and then a small blade releases the band at a controlled depth. Instead of directly engaging each band in the same way Avéli does, Cellfina treats the marked dimples through a tissue-stabilized release process.

Which Cellulite Treatment Is Better?

There isn’t one best cellulite treatment for every person.

Dr. Bev may recommend Avéli when dimples are clearly defined and need a more direct, dimple-by-dimple band release. Cellfina may be a better fit when your cellulite pattern can be treated well with its suction-stabilized release method, especially for localized dimples on the thighs or buttocks.

During your consultation, Dr. Bev can look at the number, depth, and location of your dimples, along with your skin quality and any laxity. From there, she can recommend the option that best matches your anatomy and expectations.
