The FDA has approved a new filler for rejuvenation of the soft tissue of the midface. Unlike the other volumizing fillers on the market, Voluma is an HA filler similar to Juvederm and Restylane, only thicker. This is what makes it an ideal filler for the midface and cheeks. Voluma is made by Allergan the same company that makes Botox and Juvederm, and has been available in Europe for many years where it has been very popular and has had great success.

Many patients are asking whether Voluma is right for them. To answer that question we have to look at how facial injectables are used and then look at the properties of each one. Initially we need to identify the area to be treated- the cheeks, jowls, temples, lips, fine lines etc. This dictates the type of filler we need to use. The deeper we need to treat, the thicker the filler needs to be to hold up and produce the results we want. The filler should provide a good amount of lift and have good longevity. Voluma does both, lasting up to 18 months.

Voluma is FDA approved to restore age-related volume loss in the mid-face (the cheeks, cheekbones and around the chin). People age differently: their skin may deflate (lose fullness or volume), descend (droop or sag) or both. However, few people realize the mid-face is one of the first areas to show the signs of aging – as we lose facial volume, cheeks deflate and descend. Restoration of volume creates a more youthful appearance. This may be counter intuitive, but fuller faces are more youthful faces.

Other HA fillers are thinner and are better suited for more superficial areas such as NL folds (parentheses around the mouth), lips and fine lines.

When considering treatment with fillers, you need to discuss what type of fillers your Dr. uses and which would be recommended for you. The experience of your doctor, but more importantly the area to be treated will dictate which filler will work best. Keep in mind that as we get older, many things are changing simultaneously. As a result, you may need 2 different fillers to look your very best.
