Facelift New Jersey

As the aging population continues to grow, procedures which create more youthful contours are becoming more popular in New Jersey.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift is a procedure performed by New Jersey Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Friedlander that can make your face look younger and fresher. As we age, gravity, heredity, stress and weight change all take their toll causing a loss of facial fullness. Take a look at a child or a young adult. They both have fuller faces. Now look at your parents or grandparents. They have lost that fullness or volume. The key to a successful rejuvenation is a restoration of volume. The best way to achieve this is with a facelift surgery which can turn back the hands of time by lifting your sagging cheeks, smoothing your jawline, tightening the loose skin of your neck (“turkey gobbler”), and removing excess fat below your chin.

Complimentary procedures involving skin care and treatment will help to further improve the negative effects of gravity and sun exposure and help you maintain your result.

Benefits of Facelift surgery*

  • It improves the appearance of the lower two thirds of the face.
  • It restores volume to the face.
  • It tightens and lifts sagging muscles.
  • It smoothes wrinkled skin.
  • It improves the tone and elasticity of the skin.
  • It improves the jawline.
  • It is often combined with a neck lift to improve the sagging of the neck or to reduce the excess fat that is sometimes present.

Dr. Friedlander will customize the procedure for you and address your areas of concern. It is important to maintain facial harmony. After all, you want all of your face to look younger, not just some of it. You may choose to add eyelid surgery or other ancillary procedures to create a balanced look. Dr. Friedlander incorporates features of a neck lift into all of her face lifts to achieve a more youthful appearance. She will utilize liposuction to help define the jawline and suture suspension to help lift and define the neck, jowl and cheek*.

Am I a good candidate for a Facelift?

The facelift is typically performed on patients aged 40-60, although this procedure is successfully performed on healthy patients in their 70’s and 80’s. In general, good candidates for a facelift include:

  • Any age where loose sagging skin becomes noticeable typically 40’s and 50’s although the surgery can be successful on healthy patients at any age
  • Healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that impair healing
  • Non-smokers

What to expect during the Facelift procedure

During the facelift surgery, incisions are classically made in the hairline, as well as in front of and behind the ears. Modifications limiting the extent of the incisions are common. An incision may also be made under the chin. These incisions result in minimal scarring which can be easily covered by hair or makeup. The skin and underlying fat are separated from the muscle. The fat may be thinned or suctioned to improve the overall contour of the face, neck and jawline. The muscles of the face and neck will be tightened to provide longer lasting correction. The skin is lifted and re-draped by pulling it upward and outward, and the excess skin is removed. Closed suction drains may be used.

What to expect after surgery

Stitches around the ear are removed 5-7 days after the surgery, and stitches or staples hidden within the hair are removed 10-12 days after the surgery*. Dr. Friedlander still advises you take 2 weeks off from work, but indicates that many of her patients are “lunching out” 2-3 days after the surgery*. Some swelling and bruising are normal after surgery and begin to disappear after a few days. Strenuous activity must be limited for at least four weeks after surgery.

What other procedures can be combined with a Facelift?

  • Fat Transfers-This helps to improve the jowl, the nasolabial fold (between the nose and corner of the mouth), the cheek and the orbit.
  • Eyelid Lift-This helps to improve puffy eyelids and extra skin which can age us dramatically.
  • Brow Lift-This helps to correct one of the causes of the drooping upper eyelids.
  • Neck Lift/Neck Liposuction- This helps to improve the jaw line.

Are there risks involved?

Dr. Friedlander will carefully review your medical history and the medications which you are taking. There are conditions which could conceivably cause problems during surgery such as high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, and others which will be discussed if they apply to you. If you smoke, she will counsel you on the increased risks associated with smoking. This is true for all surgeries, not only facelifts.
