Breast Asymmetry New Jersey
Asymmetry is present in everyone. Breast asymmetries, where one breast is a different size or shape is fairly common, and can be distressing. Finding properly fitting clothes or bras may be a challenge. Many women feel self-conscious and are afraid of becoming intimate with someone. There are a number of different ways Dr. Friedlander can address these problems and help you feel more confident.
Most asymmetries are subtle and do not need to be addressed, in fact, they typically are not even noticed until pointed out. Most commonly, they are noticed after pregnancy and nursing, when one breast developed more or was favored by the baby. Asymmetries tend to be developmental and come in many shapes and forms. They can involve the size, shape and position of the breast as well as the position of the nipple. Correction of these issues, which can be challenging, can lead to a more aesthetically pleasing result. In its simplest form, asymmetry can be corrected by using implants of different sizes and dimensions. This however can lead to additional asymmetries and should be used only for larger size discrepancies, and after thorough discussion. Correction of nipple discrepancies can also improve the aesthetics but sometimes result in additional scars. Breast position issues can also addressed by adjustment of the natural fold position. If asymmetry is marked, the correction may require a combination of several different techniques including reduction, uplift, and augmentation.
Options for Breast Asymmetry Correction:
- Breast Augmentation with different sized implants
- Breast Lift
- Breast Lift with Implants
- Breast Reduction
- Breast Enhancement with Fat
The process begins with determining the ideal size and shape for you. Dr. Friedlander will work closely with you to help guide you in this essential decision. Will the smaller breast need to be made larger or the larger breast made smaller? Will the breast need to be lifted and the nipple areola repositioned? Will the natural breast tissue need to be repositioned? The best results are usually achieved if the same thing is done to both sides. Dr. Friedlander can help you determine the best approach to take in order to achieve the beautiful results you deserve.
What is the difference between Augmentation alone and Augmentation for asymmetry?
The procedures that are used are used in all types of breast surgery, regardless of whether the breasts are symmetrical. The difference is that a different procedure will need to be performed on each side to even out the size and shape. Most commonly, this is simple and requires 2 different sized implants or removing different amounts of tissue from each side.
What can I expect after my surgery?
The healing process is the same for all types of breast surgery. There is always swelling which worsens for a few days before beginning to resolve. The swelling will not be symmetrical since different procedures were performed on each side. This of course will resolve after a few weeks. You will gradually begin to notice the improved size and shape as the healing progresses. There is no strenuous activity or working out for 4 weeks since this can affect the swelling or worse, lead to bleeding. Most women return to work after 5-7 days.
