Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty

Do you find that no matter how much you diet or work out you cannot eliminate your "pot belly" or "pooch"? A tummy tuck is a procedure that is aimed at correcting fullness of the lower abdomen that is caused by excess skin and fat resulting from pregnancy or weight gain and to correct areas of fat deposit that are resistant to dieting. The difference between this procedure and liposuction is that this procedure removes excess and/or stretched out skin in addition to tightening the underlying muscle (abs or rectus muscle) to give a flat, firm look. It may be performed with other contouring procedures or even GYN procedures, such as tubal ligation or hysterectomy.

Dr. Friedlander will review the benefits of a tummy tuck versus liposuction of the tummy. She will advise you which procedure will give you a better result. Sometimes it is beneficial to have liposuction of the hips and/or thighs done simultaneously with a tummy tuck.

This surgery is done in the hospital and an overnight stay is required. You may wish to stay longer and this can be arranged. Dr. Friedlander will make a long incision in your lower abdomen, which will permit tightening of the muscle and removal of excess skin. Two drains are used to prevent accumulation of fluid under the skin. They are removed after several days. Your bed is flexed and bent in the middle to take pressure off of your tummy. You will need to walk slightly stooped over and lay in bed bent in the middle for about 1-2 weeks. You may return to routine activity after about 2 weeks and strenuous activity after about 4-5 weeks.

Liposuction

Contrary to popular belief, liposuction is frequently performed on men and women who are not overweight. These people are health conscious and diet and workout regularly, but have problem areas, such as their hips or thighs.

Liposuction is the most common plastic surgery procedure performed today. It has different names and techniques. Suction assisted liposuction, tumescent liposuction, and power assisted liposuction all involve the same procedure. Ultrasonic liposuction uses sound waves, in addition, to remove fatty tissue. It removes fat in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise, even if you only weigh 100 pounds. The procedure also works well on patients who are over their ideal body weight and have localized fat deposits. It is not a substitute for weight reduction. It is ideally suited for the lower body but can also be used on the neck, arms, and even breasts in men (gynecomastia) and women (reduction mammoplasty).

The procedure is performed by placing small incisions (about ½ inch in size) in natural skin folds, where possible. A tumescent fluid is infused, which permits gentle removal of fat. Small cannulas (tubes) attached to a suction machine are passed repeatedly to remove the fat. The empty spaces once occupied by fat coalesce and flatten to recontour the region. Post operative swelling is normal and can last several weeks. A compression garment or girdle must be worn to help minimize swelling. Natural elasticity in the skin will permit tightening after the procedure. If this elasticity is lost, as with after pregnancy or with large shifts in weight, where extensive stretch marks are seen, you may need a "tuck" in addition. No working out or strenuous activity is permitted for 4 weeks.

Thigh Lift

With aging, skin gets loose and flabby as natural elasticity disappears. In women, this tendency may result in large areas of saggy skin.

Thigh lifting is meant to stretch skin back into place, improve contours by making tighter, more attractive thigh and buttock skin, reduce fat layers and decrease irregularities in the skin surface, if necessary, and excise surplus skin.
